Warmth, Compassion, and Kindness
To volunteer at the Barrie Family Hospice of Elgin is to step into a place where compassion becomes action, and kindness becomes legacy. Here, love is felt in the smallest gestures, and dignity is honoured in the quietest moments.
At Barrie Family Hospice of Elgin, volunteers are the heart of who we are.
Volunteers bring warmth, compassion, and kindness to every corner of our home, walking alongside residents, families, volunteers and staff with open hands and open hearts. Guided by our Noble Purpose, In It Together, Moments Matter, Duty and Honour, our volunteers create comfort in the small things and meaning in the big moments. To volunteer here is to be part of something truly special: a community where love, dignity, and presence shine every day.
Volunteer Positions
At Barrie Family Hospice of Elgin, volunteers are the heart of what we do, offering comfort, care, and connection when it’s needed most. Whether it’s spending time with someone facing a life-limiting illness, lending a listening ear to a caregiver, or simply being a kind presence, our volunteers help make every moment matter.
We offer a variety of meaningful ways to get involved, so you can share your time and talents in a way that feels right for you. From hands-on support to behind-the-scenes help, there’s a place for everyone here.
+ Kitchen Volunteers
In our kitchen, volunteers are part of a team where every task, from chopping and stirring to plating and serving, is done together. Under the leadership of the Chef, meals are prepared with care for our residents. Volunteers also support keeping the Canoe Café stocked and welcoming for families and visitors.
+ Reception Volunteers
Reception volunteers are the friendly faces and welcoming energy that set the tone for everyone who walks through our doors. Their role is so much more than answering phones; they brighten days, calm nerves, share a laugh, and make people feel truly seen and cared for.
+ Direct Service Volunteers
Direct service volunteers assist care staff by stocking supplies, tidying spaces and spending time with residents.
+ Fire Pit Supervisor
Fire pit volunteers start, tend to and extinguish the fire.
Together, our volunteers make it possible with every smile, every shared task, and every moment of comfort that adds up to something extraordinary—to provide exceptional care at the end of life.
